The spirit of Africa took over Trafalgar Square during this year’s Black History Month with a daylong festival celebrating the diverse cultures of this vast continent.

London has long been a home to African communities representing the continent’s five regions – East, West, North, Central, and Southern Africa. The 2011 Census confirmed that this vibrant group is flourishing in the city, with seven percent (600,000) of London’s eight million residents being African. Notably, London hosts the largest overseas Nigerian community in the world, alongside significant populations from the Congolese, Somali, South African, Kenyan, and Ghanaian communities.

On October 11th, Trafalgar Square became the heart of African culture with the “Africa on the Square” event, organized by the Mayor of London for Black History Month. The event showcased the rich heritage of Africa through a variety of performances and activities. Highlights included African drummers, the Deele Sosomi Afrobeat Experience, Aar Maanta, acrobats, and a talent show for aspiring stars. The celebration also featured food stalls, a market selling African products, and workshops for families.

We are proud to have our gazebos at this event, providing shelter and space for many stall owners. Our company was the first choice for equipment hire, ensuring that the event ran smoothly.

“Africa on the Square” was a free event, generously sponsored by Air France, Lebara, Tolly Boy, The Voice, British Transport Police, and many others. Hosted by Capital Xtra’s DJ Abrantee and Usifu Jalloh, the Cowfoot Prince, the event welcomed attendees with the enticing aroma of African food and vibrant stalls selling African wear.

The festival drew a multicultural audience from all walks of life, offering something for everyone. Mamas Kitchen and Zoe’s Ghana Stall were among the popular vendors, serving delicious dishes and refreshing drinks like fresh coconut water. The event provided ample options for vegetarian lovers and showcased the bustling atmosphere typical of a lively festival.

This event significantly contributed to the cultural identity of the African community in the UK. The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, facilitated a fascinating and inclusive event that helped break down barriers and misconceptions about Africa. “Africa on the Square” provided a unique platform for emerging musicians, fashion designers, and artists to perform and display their talents in a historic setting.

We at Gazebo Hire London are immensely proud to have played a part in this historic event, contributing to its success and helping to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Africa.
